Find the instructions for your exact unit
Locate the model number on your paperwork or accessible equipment label. Use the manufacturer’s official website to find the matching owner’s manual, or ask your installer for a copy. Indoor and outdoor units can have different model numbers. Do not remove service panels to find them.
A filter-care routine
Only clean filters the manual identifies as user-serviceable. Ductless units may have multiple filter types; ducted systems may use replaceable filters in a separate location.
- Read before opening. Check the manual’s shutdown, power-isolation, and access instructions. A remote’s off button may not disconnect power.
- Identify the filter. Confirm whether it is washable, vacuum-cleanable, or replace-only. Never assume every filter can get wet.
- Use the approved method. Follow the manual’s instructions for removal and cleaning. Do not improvise with chemicals, brushes, water temperature, or compressed air.
- Reinstall as directed. If washing is permitted, follow the manual’s drying requirements before reinstalling. Do not operate with filters removed.
- Record the date. Follow the specified inspection interval, checking more often when the manual recommends it for dusty conditions or heavy use.

Keep water and tools out of the cabinet
Do not spray water or cleaners into the unit, reach past guards, or remove service covers. Use only the exterior-wiping method your manual permits. If access requires an unsafe reach, or a part resists removal, stop and ask for help.
Leave internal coil and blower cleaning, drain disassembly, electrical work, and refrigerant work to a qualified professional. A clean filter does not mean the entire system is clean.
When cleaning is not the answer
Persistent odors, indoor water leakage, recurring ice, unusual noises, and poor output merit professional assessment. Repeatedly cleaning or resetting the unit can leave the underlying problem unresolved. Describe the symptom and any displayed fault code to your service provider.
